Helen Holly's Hermits

Spread batter very gently onto the cookie sheet.  A knife or spatula works best.

Recipe below!
Bake as directed.

Cut out into the sizes  of your choice.
You may ask, "Who is Helen Holly?"  Helen Holly was a lady who worked at Sharfmans Jewelers in Worcester, Massachusetts many, many years ago.  This recipe was passed on to a co-worker of Helen's named Rose.  Consequently, Rose passed this recipe onto me!  Let's get back to Helen.  Helen and her husband Eddy used to live in the house where the film "Mr. Blanding's Dream House" was filmed right here in Worcester, Massachusetts.  She used to make these hermits every Friday for her husband, Eddy!  I just love tried and true recipes with a story that have been passed on from generation to generation.

This recipe for "hermits" is very easy.  One just needs patience in spreading out the batter.  A knife will do the trick.  Remember, be patient and you will have success.

Helen Holly's Hermits

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup molasses
3 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 cup raisins
3/4 cup walnuts

Put all ingredients into a mixing bowl.  Mix until combined.
Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes
Cool - Cut into squares
