Mr. Fur Finds a Warm Spot!

Mr. Fur has found himself a new warm place to relax during this long, cold winter. He has also been eating a lot just like the rest of us. Soon, we will all be counting calories instead of inches of snow...I promise. We miss Mr. Fur so much!!

Feed Our Fine Feathered Friends

Lots of birds are flocking around the feeder. This has been a very challenging winter for the birds...and the winter has been for the birds! All kidding aside, saw lots of Robins yesterday afternoon. It used to mean the first sign of spring. But I just found out Robins from this area go south. Canadian Robins go south and end up in New England. How's that for a bit of "bird trivia." That's why we here in NE can see Robins all winter long!

If you hang around with humans...

Yes, Mr. Fur is taking on some human behaviors. Now he has his own insulated cup to drink from. Not to be used by humans again. Mr. Fur is very gentle and so far hasn't had any spills.

Hand Packed Ice-Cream!

I made my own birthday cake again this year. When you bake your own, you get exactly what you want. Of course, I had to serve vanilla ice-cream alongside my cake. A Children's Table

A children's table is always a good idea. It is a really cute sight to see little people sitting and enjoying their meal just as the adults do.

Birdhouses with Multi Purposes!

My friend, Rose has been very busy all spring painting birdhouses. She uses her creativity and talents in recreating these wooden structures often found in a thrift shop or craft store. Check, dots, stripes and bows embellish these picture perfect homes. Presently they are found all around her house especially on her porch. Will the birds make it inside? We'll just have to wait and see!

Bunny Cookie Finds New Home!

Here is a bunny cookie from June's Bakeshop in New Braintree, Massachusetts. Bunny Cookie found her way to my friend, Rose's enchanted cottage. There she sits on the tea table in the tea hall. Mr. Fur finds comfort in his heated bed! Although temperatures were of a more kinder, gentler type today, Mr. Fur still didn't want to go outside. Instead after playing with his toys, he opted for his comfortable bed! Mr. Fur is very smart...wouldn't you say?

We were to have a tour of Rose's Enchanted Cottage but the weather didn't allow it to happen! Hopefully, the 2014 Christmas Season will allow us to visit my friend's special home.

Holly Pruning Time

Yes, it's holly pruning time again. Right after Thanksgiving, I will be pruning the holly. Some will decorate the house, outside planters and some will be given to friends and family for their own uses. You are seeing a slight dusting of snow. This photo was taken last week when we had a snow shower and this was the pretty result. Lots of berries this year...unlike last year! What will you be doing with your holly harvest this year?

As you know, cats have minds of their own. You can call them, snap your fingers, whistle and make a fool of yourself but if a cat chooses to look the other way...they do! Mr. Fur does exactly that! Here he is captured perfectly for a lovely October portrait!

Our neighbor, Maryanne stopped by for a visit. She took this pictue of Mr. Fur greeting her as she walked up the brick walk. Those Smart Phones do come in handy!

Begonias Take the Place of Impatience

As I reported last year, I no longer use Impatience flowers and have instead planted Begonias. During the rains of June and the extreme heat of July, these flowers have managed to be basically maintenance free! Here they are outside my garden room!

We've created an arbor of lilacs near the clothesline. Pick them and clip off the leaves for an even lovlier bouquet of purple passion!

The first of the season...

Strawberry Rhubarb pie is a family favorite! Actually, I think it is the most popular pie ever! If you don't have a rhubarb patch...think about planting one this year. Year after year, you will be rewarded with delicious rhubarb. You will be able to make muffins, pies, cobblers, upsidedown cakes, rhubarb jello and so much more!

Old Books Reinvented!

This idea came from a local library who used old books as a centerpiece. Stack books, wrap with ribbon and using a glue gun, put Spanish moss, silk daffodils and tulips on top!

Mr. Fur received an excellent "Paw"gress report from Petco. He was a good boy during his grooming appointment!

Rose's Potatoes

With the skin on, parboil potatoes. Then slice into 3/4" slices. Spray baking dish with cooking spray. Saute chopped onions in 1 T butter. Place potatoes in pan, top with onion mixture, salt, pepper and paprika. Bake until done. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and serve hot!

Colorful Fall

Early in the morning is the best time to see the pretty foliage. The sun casts light on the trees and paints a lovely picture.

Mr. Fur Says Goodbye!

Mr. Fur bids farewell to Teddy Bear. Teddy Bear is now living in California and was on the east coast while being refurbished at Bee's Closet. My friend, Liz made Teddy Bear look as good as new!

Brookfield Orchards

Brookfield Orchards has delicious apples, candies, cheeses, antiques and more! Don't forget the apple dumplings. Eat some there and buy some for home! Heat at 350 degrees for 18 minutes! Yummy!

Last Zinnia's of the Summer!

This year I had fabulous luck with my zinnias. They grew to be almost 6 feet tall! The mixed colors were magnificent. Planted in a warm sunny location, they were watered this past summer by recycled dish water that had traces of dish soap. This kept the bugs away naturally! Put zinnias in your gardening journal as a must for next year!

Vegetables and Perennials

The eggplant did very well this year mixed with the perennial flowers. These are ready for a nice eggplant recipe!

Mr. Fur's Scrapbook

Mr. Fur corresponds with many people! But perhaps his most ardent fan was Mary. We are so saddened to have to say Mary left us last week! Mary was a vibrant mother, teacher, principal and friend. She will be greatly missed by all of us especially, Mr. Fur.

Spicy Cape Cod Pumpkin Bread, Two Sisters Cook Book Page 163. No need for a mixer...just mix by hand. Two seperate bowls. As you can see my pans were different sizes but they baked in the oven together and came out beautifully. One was given away and the other stayed at home!

Zinnias Take Center Stage

In this summer of drought, I had great luck with my zinnias. I will let you in on a secret...I was watering them with my recycled dish water. The little bit of liquid soap found in the rinsewater helped to keep the bugs away from my plants. Traditionally, zinnias get infested with bugs eating their leaves hence demolishing the crop. But not this year!!!

Breakfast is on!

Jazz up your oatmeal with seasonal fruit. Blueberries add the finishing touch to this start of the day treat!

Tuna Salad Plate

Everyone has a can of tuna in the pantry. This delicious meal can be for lunch or dinner. Make your own version of tuna or try "Newport Tuna Salad" on page 49.

Tomatoes of any kind, sliced cucumbers, sliced onions, olive oil, salt and pepper...that's it!

Mr. Fur Takes Cover

Mr. Fur knows where to go during a downpour. During today's rain, he found dryness underneath the potting bench! Felines are so smart!

Fruit Salad for Lunch!

Sliced peaches, blueberries and strawberries are sprinkled with a little sugar or an artificial sweetener are put into a recycled jelly jar. Notice, the jelly jars saved and recycled have fruity covers and are neat shapes!

The HMS Pickle was the smallest ship in Admiral Horatio Nelson's fleet. This is the ship which brought back the sad news to the people of Great Britain that Admiral Nelson had been shot and killed during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. For the last 8 years, New York City Pickle Night has been held at the New York Yacht Club. It is an evening of wonderful people from both sides of the pond, including men and women from both the U. S. Navy and the Royal Navy. The two countries work together. The American Friends of the Royal Navy was formally organized in 2008 to strengthen the ties between the Royal Naval Museum in Portsmouth, England and those in the United States interested in naval history.The special relationship between the U. S. Navy and the Royal Navy particularly the history of Lord Nelson is their focus.

Let it snow...at this time of year?!

It's October and we've had a dusting of snow. Perhaps you can see it on my bench and on the green grass. Today, I was up on the arm of the bench not wanting to get my paw paws wet! This is far too early for snow. Kathy says more is predicted for tomorrow! Yikes!

Candy Corn...Don't you just love it?

Now's the time for an old time favorite...candy corn! Put some in a candy dish, decorate some cupcakes and cookies. Candy corn had existed for a century before manufacturers began offering it in other colors such as pastels for Easter and red and green for Christmas in the 1980s. The traditional Halloween variety remains the favorite, according to the National Confectioners Association.

Candy Corn Cookies - Simple & Fun!

Knead extra flour and orange fool coloring into refrigerated sugar-cookie dough. Using a triangle-shaped cookie cutter or a knife; bake according to package directions. Let cool. Dip the wide base of each cookie into melted dark chocolate. Next dip the tips into melted white chocolate. Set each cookie on parchment-lined baking sheet. Chill in freezer for 5 minutes.

A New School Year

Wishing all of our teacher friends and students a great 2011-2012 school year. On Kathy's back table, she has displayed her own little school bag, photos of a couple of her classes, an old slate writing tablet, vintage workbook, and a photo of her Mother and Uncle on the first day of school in East Brookfield, MA. Don't forget to bring an "apple" to the teacher! Teachers still love apples!

It's time for changing our displays. These little vignettes allow us to bring together our collections and appreciate them in different ways. Apples and the color red is the theme here. Get busy looking around the house for your fall vignettes.

This collection of our baby shoes is hanging on the bedroom wall we shared as children. Booties, shoes and even diaper pins complete this little nostalgic display.

Here's an adorable picture which once graced the bedroom wall in our maternal grandparent's bedroom. It comes from the 1930's era. Look around at flea markets & tag sales for this gem!
